San Diego Life Sciences Workforce Engagement Survey

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is it?

The San Diego Life Sciences Workforce Engagement Survey is a short assessment developed by BIOCOM and BEDC. The purpose is to query as many employees as possible serving within the greater San Diego area as to their perception of how well their respective life science organization engages them.

The results are intended to yield insight into better strategies for promoting the positioning of the life science industries within the San Diego area as well as provide valuable data points to participating companies as to workplace satisfaction and motivation.

What topics are covered in the survey?

The survey addresses 5 topics with approximately 4 questions per topic. The topics are:

  • Leadership Effectiveness
  • Mission, Vision, Values
  • Rewards & Recognition
  • Professional Development
  • Work / Life Balance

Is the survey confidential?

All organizational demographic input is confidential and all rater evaluations are anonymous. Results are captured and compiled by a third party administrator - ZeroBoundary Inc.

Upon request, ZeroBoundary Inc. will provide information regarding the safeguarding of data as well as provide a written confidentiality agreement.

How much does participation in the survey cost?

Participation in this survey is free.

What are the dates of the survey?

The survey is scheduled to begin Monday, April 16, 2007.

All rater input is due by Saturday, May 5, 2007

What is the Survey Administrator, and what am I expected to do?

The Survey Administrator is the name given to the person responsible for representing their organization in this assessment process.

As the person representing your organization, you are responsible for 5 key items:

1. Completing a few demographic questions (number of employees; corporate status, etc).
2. Forwarding the survey link to those within your organization either you or your senior management team believes should participate.
3. Answering any questions raters within your organization may have about the survey either directly or by referring them to the sponsoring organizations.
4. Monitoring total rater response for completion; reminding raters to complete their input by the due date specified.
5. Meeting with a representative from one of the sponsoring organizations (BIOCOM, BEDC) to review results.

How much time will this take?

As the survey administrator, you should expect to spend:/

  • Approximately 15 minutes for setup
  • Approximately 15 minutes to review progress

Survey respondents should plan to spend approximately 5-10 minutes completing the 20-question survey.

What happens with the results?

Results are captured and reported upon in two ways:

First, rating respondents from all organizations will be compiled and presented in the form of a comprehensive impact report. This global report will include cumulative results outlining possible ways with which to consider and respond to the data information received from all companies participating. Please note that in this report, individual company results are not included. Identifying company remarks are filtered before findings are reviewed at a global level.

Secondly, each participating company receives an individual report back for their organization. This report contains results for their organization as well as how their organization benchmarks against all other companies participating in the survey. Again, all information is highly confidential. Each company receives only their rating responses and is provided an illustrative charted report with which to compare and contrast their organization against the total.

ZeroBoundary Inc., the third party administrator sponsoring the survey and report engine has offered to accompany the reports with a face to face meeting for any organization desiring a more in depth discussion of the data. This is offered at no charge.

When will the results be available?

A report which contains the cumulative results will be made available through BEDC & BIOCOM by the end of June 2007.

Individual companies will be contacted with their unique results thereafter.

Will I need to take any training to distribute the survey within my organization?

No training is required to administer this survey.

Will I see the results of those responding within my company?

All rating responses are confidential and anonymous. As the administrator (the person distributing the survey), you will not see the results.

If the results are all confidential, how will I know that anyone in my company has actually taken it?

As the Survey Administrator you may monitor status in one of two ways: either online directly or by reviewing the weekly email status reminders sent to you by ZeroBoundary, Inc.

In this status recap, you will see the total number of people who have responded to the survey for your organization.

You’ll want to ensure that your company firewall or any other email security feature installed recognizes and allows any email from ZeroBoundary Inc. for this purpose.

What if the survey results lead my company to determine that development is required? Will there be ongoing development support?

Both BEDC and BIOCOM are actively planning a variety of solutions with which to provide follow up to those interested. For example, workshops, Q&A panels with subject matter experts, publications and other resources and references are being considered as a menu of offerings to those who would like to target organizational development.
